
Wearable data is increasingly part of conversations. People are tracking HRV, sleep, resting heart rate, oxygen saturation, respiratory rate, glucose, recovery, and temperature changes to name a few.
That uncertainty with this data often leads to three mistakes:
Not every wearable metric is clinically meaningful, but dismissing all patient-generated data is no longer a sustainable strategy. Knowing which trends provide useful context.
The goal is not to treat the wearable as a diagnosis, but to understand whether the data contains a signal.
No single data point in time equals disease. One low HRV reading does not equal panic. One poor sleep score does not prove dysfunction in sleep hygiene. One recovery drop does not require a dramatic intervention. Teaching people the difference between fluctuation and trend is just as important as it always has been.
A single data point is noise. A pattern might be a signal.
Population averages can mislead. The person's personal baseline is what matters. A metric that looks low compared with the app’s “optimal range” may be normal for that individual. A value that looks normal may be abnormal if it represents a major deviation from baseline. That is clinical interpretation. This concept is much more difficult to grasp given normal ranges are not the same with wearable device data vs. common blood laboratory results.
