The Sleep Architecture Problem

The Sleep Architecture Problem

One of the biggest limitations of sleep scores is their inability to fully reflect sleep architecture. Sleep architecture refers to the organization and distribution of sleep stages throughout the night.

Research consistently demonstrates that disruptions in sleep architecture can significantly impact recovery, cognitive performance, cardiovascular health, and emotional regulation.

Consider two hypothetical individuals. Both receive a sleep score of 85.

The first individual obtains adequate REM sleep, stable NREM sleep, minimal awakenings, and strong autonomic recovery.

The second experiences frequent micro-arousals, reduced REM sleep, elevated overnight heart rate, and increased sympathetic nervous system activity.

Despite identical scores, their physiological recovery profiles are dramatically different. This distinction matters because biological outcomes are driven by physiology, not by scores. The body does not know what number appeared on your app. The body responds to the underlying processes occurring throughout the night. Listening to your body and how you feel when you wake up is always more valuable than any sleep score by itself.

Sleep scores vary due to a combination of measurement-related factors, biological night-to-night variability, and individual characteristics to name a few reasons. It is important to note that there is no single method of capturing all dimensions of sleep health. With that said, learning more depth on wearables and AI is how you can better understand how to interpret your own data to optimize your sleep.
